🛡️ HOMEOWNER SAFETY PROTOCOL // 10-POINT INSPECTION

Garage Door Safety Checklist & Diagnostic Protocol

An overhead garage door is the heaviest moving mechanical system in your home. Use this 10-point checklist to inspect your door monthly, identify mechanical risks, and know when professional service is required.

CRITICAL MECHANICAL HAZARD WARNING

Garage door springs and lift cables operate under over 300 lbs of torque tension. NEVER attempt DIY repairs, adjustments, or unbolting bottom fixtures.

30-Day Protocol

10-Point Homeowner Safety Inspection Matrix

Perform these non-hazardous visual and functional checks monthly to protect your family and catch mechanical failures early.

CHECK_01 // HIGH-TENSIONHIGH-RISK SPRING

01. Visual Spring Inspection

Look at the torsion springs mounted on the steel shaft above the closed garage door or extension springs on the sides.

⚠️Danger Sign: A 2-inch visible split/gap in the steel coil indicates a severed spring. Door will be extremely heavy and must not be operated.
✔Safe Action: Call certified technicians immediately for spring replacement.
CHECK_02 // AIRCRAFT CABLEHIGH TENSION

02. Lift Cable Integrity Check

Visually inspect the steel cables attached to the bottom corners of the door spooling up to the overhead drums.

⚠️Danger Sign: Fraying, individual wire unraveling, or slack cable loops hanging loose.
✔Safe Action: Never touch loose cables under tension. Call dispatch for cable re-stringing.
CHECK_03 // PHOTO-EYEUL 325 LIFE-SAFETY

03. Photo-Eye Optical Sensor Test

With the door open, press the remote to close it, and wave a long object across the infrared beam path 6 inches off the floor.

✔Pass Criteria: The door must immediately stop descending and reverse back to the fully open position.
⚠️Fail Sign: If the door continues closing, the sensors are misaligned or malfunctioning.
CHECK_04 // COUNTERWEIGHTBALANCE TEST

04. Manual Counterweight Balance Test

With the door FULLY CLOSED, pull the red emergency disconnect cord, then lift the door manually halfway (3 to 4 feet off floor).

✔Pass Criteria: A balanced door should remain suspended in place supported solely by spring tension.
⚠️Fail Sign: If the door slams down or snaps open, spring balance adjustment is required.
CHECK_05 // CONTACT REVERSALUL 325 FORCE TEST

05. Auto-Reverse 2×4 Contact Test

Lay a solid 2×4 block of wood flat on the floor in the center of the doorway and activate the door to close.

✔Pass Criteria: Upon striking the 2×4, the door must immediately reverse upward within 2 seconds.
⚠️Fail Sign: If the motor forces down without reversing, opener force limits must be adjusted.
CHECK_06 // TRACK ANCHORSTRUCTURAL RAILS

06. Track Alignment & Wall Fasteners

Visually inspect the vertical and horizontal steel tracks and the mounting brackets securing them to the framing.

✔Ensure tracks are parallel and plumb with no dents, gaps, or loose lag bolts.
⚠️Warning: Loose brackets cause tracks to spread, creating catastrophic off-track risks.
CHECK_07 // ROLLERSGLIDE ANALYSIS

07. Roller & Bearing Wear Analysis

Listen to the door during travel and check the roller wheels inside the vertical track channels.

✔Rollers should spin freely without wobbling, sliding, or grinding in the raceway.
⚠️Warning: Cracked plastic or rusted steel rollers can seize and derail the door.
CHECK_08 // PANEL HINGESRIGIDITY SCAN

08. Center Hinges & Panel Rigidity

Inspect the steel hinges connecting each door section and the horizontal U-bar reinforcement struts.

✔Check for loose screws, stress cracks around hinge holes, and panel sag.
⚠️Warning: Broken center hinges cause door sections to pinch and buckle inward.
CHECK_09 // MANUAL OVERRIDESAFETY RELEASE

09. Emergency Release Cord Function

Verify that the red manual release rope hanging from the opener carriage operates smoothly.

✔Safe Rule: Only test the emergency disconnect when the door is FULLY CLOSED.
⚠️Warning: Pulling the cord when the door is open with a broken spring can cause it to crash down!
CHECK_10 // WEATHERSEALTHERMAL BARRIER

10. Weather Seal & Bottom Astragal

Inspect the heavy rubber weather seal running along the bottom aluminum retainer of the garage door.

✔Ensure a tight seal across the concrete floor with no daylight visible underneath.
✔Protects against rain, drafts, freezing moisture, rodents, and debris.
